Joey Cavazos – Executive Director, VisionWorks, LLC
Joel “Joey” Cavazos is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry and Criminal Justice. His career with the Juvenile Justice Department in San Antonio, Texas lasted 25 years before he retired as a supervisor in 2010. He is the owner of Elements of Change, LLC, a company that provides outdoor experiential programming to various organizations.
Longer than his law enforcement career, Joey has been involved with Camp Discovery since its inception. He has held a variety of roles at camp through the years and is currently one of the Co-Directors along with Zeff Gomes. Joey is also the current Board Chairman of the YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow, along with serving on the Board for the Children’s Oncology Camping Association-International (COCA-I ) as the Region 5 Representative.
Johnny Primomo – President and Chairman, Board of Directors
Johnny Primomo has been a United States Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Texas in San Antonio since 1988. He previously served as a volunteer and then on the Board of Directors for the Children’s Shelter of San Antonio.
Since 2007, Johnny has volunteered on the hematology/oncology floor at Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, formerly Christus Santa Rosa Hospital. He began volunteering at Camp Discovery in 1990 and has served as a cabin counselor, ropes course facilitator and as z Camp co-director.
Karen Torges – Vice President, Board of Directors
Karen Torges currently serves as Vice President of the Board for VisionWorks. She has over thirty years of experience in non-profit management, strategic planning, relationship and project management, and collaborations. She has worked extensively with volunteer groups at the local, state and national level on multiple public health issues.
Karen helped initiate Camp Discovery and had the pleasure of working to see it grow for sixteen years; and has recently re-engaged with VisionWorks to continue this important effort. She’s also a preschool teacher for three-year-olds, and is a strategic collaborations and partnerships consultant.
Keith Howard – Secretary
Keith Howard practiced law in San Antonio for 25 years, acting as the organizing attorney, corporate secretary, and a board member for VisionWorks since its incorporation in 1999. In 2009, Keith retired from the practice of law and entered the ministry. He now serves as the senior pastor for Faith Presbyterian Church (PCA) in San Antonio.

Maria G. Falcon-Cantrill, MD
Dr. Falcon-Cantrill grew up in Converse, TX and graduated from Judson High School. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of the Incarnate Word and her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
She also completed a residency in Pediatrics and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the UT Health Science Center. Dr. Falcon-Cantrill is currently a Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Methodist Children’s Hospital. She started volunteering at Camp Discovery as a camp physician in 2010.
Don Gregory, Jr.
Don Gregory, Jr. has been in the medical sales field since 1988. He has volunteered for several hospice organizations in the Austin area. His relationship with Camp Discovery began in 2004 as a Red Boy cabin counselor. He also has served on the planning committee for Camp Discovery during that time. He lives in Round Rock with his lovely wife Ruth.
Leah is a Certified Child Life Specialist and has worked in Pediatic Oncology and the Neonatal Intensive Care for nearly 14 years. Her most recent employment was with Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital now known as The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Having been involved in Camp Discovery since 2002 she served as Program Director for 10 years. Her passion is serving children and families facing cancer.
Howie Nestel has been in marketing for over 20 years.
In that time, he has provided sales and marketing services to over 1,000 companies including Proctor & Gamble, Coca Cola, Eye Masters, Chrysler, MTV, ABC, The Alma Awards, NCLR, Viacom and DuPont. Additionally, he has consulted general market and Hispanic advertising agencies, political campaigns, non-profit organizations and U.S. government offices.
His company, Sharkmatic Advertising, is a cool little ad agency specializing in very creative, quick turn-a-round, low cost, sales-oriented marketing solutions. Sharkmatic utilizes edgy as well as traditional marketing approaches and is comprised of a team of creative, marketing-savvy professionals. The agency creates logos, brochures, vehicle wraps, social media campaigns and has completed over to 500 websites. You can see more by going to www.sharkmatic.com.
Howie is fluent in English and Spanish, is married and the father of two girls and a boy. He graduated from the University of Texas Business School in Austin and has lived and worked in the U.S., Mexico, Central America, Canada, Europe and Israel. In addition to running his advertising agency, Howie sits on 6 non-profit organization boards and has donated his time, talent and effort to over 50 charities over the years.
Bill Martin is a retired YMCA Executive with 30 years of experience leading and developing new YMCA’s in San Antonio and Houston. In 1984, as the Director of YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow, he assisted the American Cancer Society (ACS) develop the first Camp Discovery Program. He and his staff worked with ACS to design the program, provide the framework and facilities for delivering the program.
He currently serves on the Board of YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow and VisionWorks.
